Members of the Canadian Auto Workers union are staging a protest in Toronto's financial district.

Protesters have gathered outside the offices of Catalyst Capital Group at the TD Centre in a show of support for 36 workers who were laid off last fall when the Snowbear plant in Guelph shut down.

Snowbear makes utility trailers and snowplows.

Catalyst Capital Group is a private equity firm that's a secured lender to Snowbear, CAW said in a news release.

The union said Catalyst is trying to sell the assets of the company to recoup lost investments, and CAW has not been provided any assurances the laid-off workers will receive the approximately $500,000 in severance pay they are still owed.

Motorists and pedestrians may encounter some traffic disruptions due to the protest at 77 King St. West, between Bay and York streets.
