A new kind of bike lane could be coming to a pair of downtown streets.
Members of city hall's Public Works Committee approved a plan to build separated bike lanes on Adelaide and Richmond Street today.
The proposed bike lanes would run from Bathurst to Sherbourne Street and be separated from traffic using a curb.
An environmental audit will now be conducted with the lanes potentially being installed by 2013.
The estimated price tag is $1.2 million.
In a related motion, the committee also voted in favour of asking staff to conduct a study examining the feasibility of expanding the lanes both east and west in the future.
The idea of installing a network of separated bike lanes has been floated by Coun. Denzil Minnan-Wong as a safe alternative to installing bike lanes on major city thoroughfares.
In fact, when city council voted to remove a bike lane on Jarvis Street this spring, the idea of constructing separated bike lanes elsewhere in the city came up repeatedly in the debate.
