The city has voted to support a deal with CUPE Local 79 for a new contract - one that Mayor Rob Ford says will save the city $50 million over the next four years.

The vote passed 40 to 1 at council Monday with Coun. Paula Fletcher being the only one who voted against the deal.

The vote comes after the union representing part-time recreation workers in Toronto recommended an amended version of a deal that was originally put forward to its members.

The recreation workers were legally allowed to walk off the job but both sides decided to go back to the negotiating table and avoid a labour dispute.

Ford said Monday that a "new and improved collective agreement" was essential to controlling costs and improving customer service.

"I would like to thank our front-line workers who understand that during these tough times, changes were needed in order to continue delivering fantastic service to the residents of Toronto," Ford said in the statement.

He said under the new contract, employees will receive a modest wage increase and will maintain "some of the best terms of employment anywhere in the country."
