A CN Rail engineering employee killed after being struck by a train Thursday afternoon has been identified.

CN Rail spokesman Frank Binder identified the deceased as Rick McColl, 53, of Hampton, Ont.

McColl had worked for CN for 32 years, according to Binder.

McColl was struck shortly after 1 p.m. five kilometres east of Guildwood Station by Via Rail train 51 en route from Montreal and Ottawa to Toronto.

Malcolm Andrews, a spokesperson for Via Rail, said the train was carrying 170 passengers and six crew members when it struck McColl.

There were no reports of injuries on board.

Andrews said that the tracks the incident occurred on are used by Via Rail and GO passenger trains, as well as CN freight trains.

Full service on the Lakeshore East GO train line has resumed after an afternoon suspension between Guildwood and Pickering stations.

Two workers on the scene who witnessed the incident were interviewed by Durham police.

Durham police and CN are conducting a a joint investigation into the incident. The Ministry of Labour has also been notified.
