Be prepared for some delays at Pearson International Airport thanks to a massive computer outage.

A computer problem with the flight planning system is affecting both incoming and departing flights at the busiest airport in Canada, a representative with Nav Canada told CP24 Thursday evening.

Ron Singer, of Nav Canada, said the problem is currently being addressed, but in the meantime, the issue has created a backlog of departures, which has in turn impacted arriving flights.

Earlier information sent out by the organization saying that the problem was fixed was premature, Singer said.

“We regret the delays we have been causing,” he added.

He did not provide an estimated time for a fix on the problem.

In an email to the Canadian Press later in the evening, Singer said flight information was being processed manually for departures and that was helping with the backlog.

Singer said safety was not being compromised.

"Air traffic controllers can see the aircraft and talk to pilots in their airspace," he said. "The measures we have put in place to manage a safe and orderly flow of traffic, at a slower pace, are intended to ensure safety."

Trish Krale, of the GTAA, says there will be delays throughout the night.

The majority of flights at the airport have been impacted, Krale adds.

One flight passenger tweeted her plane was sitting on the tarmac for three hours.

Persons flying overnight and Friday are being asked to check the status of their flights before leaving for the airport.
