Police in Durham Region have launched an animal cruelty investigation following the discovery of a partially decomposed dog’s head in a Pickering park over the weekend.

Police say they were called to Summer Park, in the Finch Avenue and Altona Road area, after the discovery of animal remains on Sunday.

The partially decomposed head of the small dog appears to have been cut off with a sharp instrument, police say.

The animal’s collar was also located by police.

Officers have attempted to contact the dog’s owners, and are appealing to members of the public who may have any information to contact investigators at 905-579-1520 ext. 2858 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
