TORONTO - A Canadian-made medical drama about life at a Toronto hospital is headed to NBC.

The U.S. broadcaster has picked up 13 episodes of the CTV series "Saving Hope."

CTV says the hour-long series is set to debut on the both sides of the border this summer.

The show stars Michael Shanks ("Stargate Atlantis") as a charismatic chief of surgery who ends up in a coma, leaving the hospital in chaos.

He wanders the halls in "spirit" form while his fellow surgeon and fiancee, played by Erica Durance ("Smallville"), races to save his life and those of other patients.

The series follows in the footsteps of other CTV productions that have crossed the border, including "Flashpoint" and "The Listener." CTV says principal photography set to begin March 12 in Toronto.
