A stretch of the QEW's eastbound lanes at Cawthra Road in Mississauga has reopened after a serious crash closed the highway for hours Friday afternoon and backed up traffic for kilometres.

A 16-year-old male was air lifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to Ontario Provincial Police.

Three people from other vehicles were also transported to hospital. Their injuries are described as minor.

Police said the victim was driving a black four-door sedan that smashed through a concrete barrier, then through a guardrail,  before landing on the highway around 1:30 p.m.

"All we saw was a large dustball and when it finally cleared we saw the car launching through the wall and over the metal barrier, which worked kind of like a ramp," Roy Basso told CP24. "I have never seen an accident like it in my life."
