Firefighters have located the body of an 81-year-old woman in the rubble of a Riverdale home that collapsed in a fire overnight.

The woman was found in a bed on the main floor of the home, leading fire officials to believe she likely died in her sleep.

Division Commander Andrew Kostiuk said the woman had mobility issues and used a walker, which is why she mostly stayed on the main floor of the home.

Emergency crews were called to the Withrow Avenue home, near Pape and Riverdale, at around 4:20 a.m. after a neighbour called 911.

Sebastian Clovis told CP24 he woke up to screams and immediately looked out his window. He saw a house engulfed in flames and called 911 before running out to help.

“The fire was going pretty good, two floors were going and in the five minutes it took for me to call (911) and fire (crews) to arrive, the three floors were up in flames,” Clovis said.

The flames quickly spread to homes on either side and soon afterwards, the second floor of the first house that caught fire collapsed.

At the height of the fire 17 trucks and 65 firefighters were on scene.

Officials believed the fire started on the main floor of the home as the roof remained intact when the second floor of the house collapsed.

Clovis said he hadn’t seen his elderly neighbour in a couple of days.

Officials at the scene confirmed to CP24 that no one called 911 from inside the home.

Paramedics treated one person for minor injuries at the scene.

Meanwhile, motorists were rerouted around the area throughout the day. The road is expected to stay closed until later today as firefighters continue to put out hot spots and clean up the debris caused by the fire.

Because of the extensive damage, the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been called to the scene. Toronto Fire Capt. Adrian Ratushniak said at this point, the fire does not appear to have been started by suspicious means.

Toronto Fire Services were busy overnight with two other fires across the city.

Arson is suspected in a small blaze that broke out at a convenience store in the downtown core, at the corner of Queen and John streets.

No one was injured in the fire.

Earlier Friday morning, an Etobicoke home caught fire, forcing a family of five out of their house.

The fire broke out on a second floor bedroom of the Cabernet Circle home, around 1:45 a.m. No injuries were reported.
