Viewers in the GTA will be seeing more local news on their screens soon.

In Toronto, that means CP24’s Live at 5 and Live at 5:30 will be broadcast on the main CTV Network ahead of CTV Toronto’s flagship news show at 6 p.m.

CTV News at 6 will continue to be cross simulcast on both stations.

Bell Media announced their plans to expand local news across the country Wednesday.

“Local news is an essential institution that unites communities across the country, and we are excited about our investment in more local news coverage with these daily 5 p.m. newscasts on all CTV stations,” said CTV News President Wendy Freeman.

The move will add 5 p.m. newscasts to local CTV stations in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, Yorkton, Winnipeg, Northern Ontario, Kitchener, Ottawa and Montreal.

Local stations in Vancouver, Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton, Lethbridge and Atlantic Canada already air 5 p.m. newscasts.

“A staple in CTV’s local lineups for generations, CTV NEWS broadcasts are fundamental to our local market strategy of delivering local news that matters to our viewers, while providing a strong lead-in to our winning primetime slate,” said Nikki Moffatt, Bell Media’s senior vice-president finance. “Adding locally produced, early evening weeknight newscasts in all key markets benefits our industry and partners, while strengthening the communities we are proudly committed to serve.”

CP24 is a division of Bell Media.
