TORONTO -- The second season of "True Detective" boasts two Canadian actors in prominent roles.

HBO has confirmed that Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch have signed on for the eight-episode sophomore season of the hit drama.

McAdams will play Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff's Department detective whose refusal to compromise her ethics puts her at odds with the system she serves.

Meanwhile Kitsch was cast in the role of war veteran and highway patrol officer Paul Woodrugh, who is trying to escape a troubled past and the sudden attention caused by a scandal that never occurred.

The season will focus on three police officers and a career criminal who find themselves caught in a conspiracy following a murder.

Kitsch is a B.C.-born actor best known for his roles in "Friday Night Lights" and "The Grand Seduction." McAdams hails from London, Ont., and skyrocketed to stardom with "The Notebook" and "Mean Girls."

British actress Kelly Reilly is also joining the cast as a former D-list actress and current wife of Frank Semyon, a criminal and entrepreneur played by Vince Vaughan.

As previously announced, Colin Farrell will play Ray Velcoro, a detective whose allegiances are torn between his bosses in a corrupt police department and the mobster who controls him.

"True Detective" is created and written by Nic Pizzolatto and the first two episodes will be directed by Justin Lin ("Fast & Furious").

The hour-long drama has begun production in California.
