LOS ANGELES -- A lawyer for Marvin Gaye's family says singers Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams have been dishonest and should be punished for copying the late singer's music without permission.
Attorney Richard Busch said in the closing arguments of a copyright-infringement trial that Thicke and Williams have repeatedly changed their stories about crafting the 2013 hit "Blurred Lines." He told an eight-person jury they could award Gaye's children millions of dollars.
Thicke and Williams' attorney however urged the jury to reject the claims. Lawyer Howard King says a verdict in the Gayes' favour would have a chilling effect on musicians trying to evoke an era or genre.
Gayes' children have sued the singers claiming "Blurred Lines" copies their father's 1977 hit, "Got to Give It Up."
Williams and Thicke have denied they copied Gaye's music.
