TORONTO - The union that represents 4,000 workers at Metro grocery stores in Ontario has reached a tentative contract agreement.

The proposed contract covers 28 stores in the Toronto area owned by Metro Inc. (TSX:MRU).

Other terms of the agreement weren't released in Friday's announcement.

Unifor Local 414 had been in position to legally strike as soon as Sunday, prior to the deal.

Loblaw (TSX:L) has also avoided a strike that could have begun across Ontario on Saturday if it hadn't reached amended contracts with workers represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers union.

UFCW Local1000a, representing 13,600 workers at 69 Loblaw-owned stores under banners such as Great Food and Superstore ratified a revised contract on Wednesday. UFCW Locals 175 and 633 ratified their agreement on Thursday, allowing 1,600 members to return to work after an earlier vote rejected the original offer.
