Coloured pencils and crayons are no substitute for real lipstick and eyeliner, Crayola is warning its customers.

A number of popular online makeup tutorials say the “non-toxic” products are safe to use as an alternative to cosmetics.

In one of the YouTube tutorials, a beauty blogger, who pitches the products as harmless, calls Crayola to ask if it would be OK if the products end up on your skin or in your eye. In the video, the Crayola representative says the products are non-toxic and therefore completely safe.

However, in response to the videos, Crayola has released a statement, discouraging people from using the products as makeup.

“Although our products are nontoxic, we do not recommend using them to make lipstick, eyeliner or other make-up,” the statement read.

“They are not designed, tested or approved for this purpose.”
