BROCKVILLE, Ont. -- Via Rail inaugurated its newly transformed Brockville station Thursday following $1 million of renovations.
The national passenger carrier said the aim of the project was to modernize the 143-year-old building while highlighting its historical character.
The new brick finish replicates the look of the original structure, Via said, adding that the "bull's-eye-style" windows at each end of the building are unique to the station.
The work -- part of what Via says is a larger effort to modernize its facilities -- also included a new roof and accessibility improvements for people with disabilities.
About 53,000 rail passengers travel to and from Brockville each year, said Yves Desjardins-Siciliano, Via Rail's president and CEO. He said "traffic continues to grow in the Ontario-Quebec corridor."
