NAPANEE, Ont. -- A 48-year-old man has been charged after police say a three-year-old boy was locked in an apartment bedroom east of Toronto.

Police say neighbours could hear the boy cry out for his caregiver while trapped in the Napanee apartment around 1:45 a.m. New Year's Day.

They say officers attending the scene found the boy alone in the apartment, with the bedroom door held shut with a belt.

It's alleged a male custodian was visiting another apartment in the building at the time of the incident.

Police say the child was unharmed and turned over to child protection workers.

An unidentified Napanee man has been charged with forcible confinement and is set to appear in court Feb. 19.
