Saying he wants to make Toronto as clean as a "new five dollar bill," Mayor Rob Ford officially launched a community cleanup campaign Wednesday.

The Clean Toronto Together campaign will include a cleanup day for schools and workplaces on April 20 and a community cleanup day on April 21.

During the community cleanup day, Ford will be picking up trash at Amesbury Park near Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue, but he's encouraging city residents to organize similar events in their own neighbourhoods.

"Cleaning up our city starts right here and right now folks," Ford told reporters. "Get together with friends, family, neighbours and clean up a public park, a ravine or even a neighbourhood."

This is the city's second annual Clean Toronto Together campaign. Last year city staff were able to remove more than 8,000 tonnes of litter during a four week spring cleanup that accompanied the campaign.

This year Ford wants to break that mark.

He's also urging anyone who sees graffiti to contact city hall.

"If there is one person that hates graffiti it is me," he said. "If you see it take a picture of it, send it to my office and we will get it cleaned up."

Coun. Cesar Palacio called the campaign "one of the greatest initiatives the city has."

CP24 is a media sponsor for the event.
