A contingent of Toronto police officers will be among those attending a funeral for slain RCMP officer David Wynn in Edmonton Monday.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the funeral for Wynne, 42, who was fatally shot during a routine stop at an Edmonton-area casino last week.

Speaking with CP24 Sunday, Deputy Chief Peter Sloly said he’ll be leading the contingent of 12 officers as a representative for Chief Bill Blair.

“It’s a tragic circumstance and the police family is going to rally together in support of our RCMP colleagues,” Sloly said.

He said while all Canadians are affected by the tragedy, the death hits hard for those who wear a uniform.

“All the deaths of an officer in the line of duty are shocking. This one I guess hits home a little bit because it was such a regular duty event – pulling over a car, going over to start a conversation and all of a sudden we’ve lost another officer,” he said.

He said part of the aim is let Wynn’s family know they are not alone.

“The RCMP is a national symbol so I think this hits Canadians right across the country. We’ll be there to add our prayers and support to the family of the officer who has fallen and the RCMP and Canadians as a whole,” Sloly said.

Wynn leaves behind a wife and two sons. Another RCMP officer was also shot during the incident and is still recovering from his wounds.
