A new poll shows John Tory continues to lead Toronto’s race to become mayor.

The interactive voice response poll, conducted by Mainstreet Technologies, asked 2,469 respondents who they plan to vote for.

It found that if the election were held today, 40 per cent of respondents would support Tory; 25 per cent would support Olivia Chow and 23 per cent would support Doug Ford. Eleven per cent of respondents said they were still undecided.

The poll also found that John Tory has the most committed supporters, with 43 per cent saying they are “certain to vote.”

The poll has a margin or error of plus or minus two percentage points.

The poll comes as Doug Ford prepares to ramp up his efforts in the city’s mayoral race after signing up Sept. 12 to run instead of his brother, Mayor Rob Ford, after the mayor was diagnosed with a tumour in his abdomen.

Doctors at Mount Sinai have since determined that Mayor Ford has a rare type of cancer and he is undergoing a round of chemotherapy to try and tackle the illness.

Doug Ford has spent much of his time at the hospital since signing up to run for mayor. However he kicked off his campaign over the weekend, knocking on doors and telling supporters he “can’t wait” to get out and speak to residents. He is scheduled to take part in his first debate against Tory and Chow on Tuesday.

In addition to the mayoral race, the pollster also conducted a separate survey that found Mayor Rob Ford’s nephew is trailing in his effort to become a Ward 1 Toronto District School Board trustee.

That poll found that Michael Ford sits at 22 per cent support behind incumbent John Hastings (26 per cent). That poll had a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.

Michael Ford had been signed up to run for Doug Ford’s current Etobicoke council seat, but signed up to run as a trustee instead after Mayor Ford signed up to run for the seat instead of seeking re-election as mayor.
