After eight years on city council, Coun. Adam Vaughan says he plans to try his hand at federal politics by seeking the Liberal nomination in Trinity-Spadina.

Vaughan confirmed his plans in a live interview with CP24 Thursday afternoon, saying that he’s tired of begging for money from Ottawa and that he wants to run federally so that he can make a larger difference.

"I want to go to Ottawa and make sure that we un-elect Stephen Harper and that we elect Justin Trudeau," Vaughan said.

Touting his record advocating for a federal housing strategy, Vaughan said he wants to further his fight at the federal level and that he believes in Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau.

Considered one of council’s most vocal left-leaning members, Vaughan has represented a portion of the riding since 2006. The seat was recently vacated by Olivia Chow after the NDP figure announced that she would step down to run for mayor of Toronto.

Vaughan will face NDP candidate Joe Cressy, who has already won his party’s nomination for the byelection.
