A driver that fatally struck a six-year-old girl in Leaside earlier this month has been charged with failure to stop at a red light and careless driving.

Georgia Walsh was in the intersection of Millwood Road at McRae Drive shortly after 4 p.m. on July 16. when she was struck by a westbound van that had just made a right hand turn

In the aftermath of the crash, several neighbourhood residents told CP24 that drivers often speed through the residential area and police promised to "look into all possibilities" as they investigated the tragic accident.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon, Walsh’s family thanked police for their “exhaustive investigation” but declined further comment.

“At this time we pray for all the families involved in this tragedy. We will have no further comment on the matter and ask for privacy as we deal with our loss,” the statement read.

Walsh was the daughter of the president of the Conservative Party of Canada John Walsh.

The 50- year-old driver, who has not been identified, will appear in court at College Park on Sept. 8.
