WHITEHORSE -- Stephen Harper had pledged in mid-August that if re-elected his government would grow the military reserve force from 24,000 to 30,000.

And he's announcing today that a new unit for the Yukon will be part of that effort.

The territory last had its own reserve force in 1968.

It's the first of two scheduled announcements in this city, held by a Tory MP fighting a tough race.

Ryan Leef snatched the riding away from the Liberals in 2011 but is facing a strong challenge from his former rival, Larry Bagnell.

Harper is spending the final day of his campaign week in Whitehorse and is set to return to Ottawa later Friday.
