Former U.S. president Bill Clinton has weighed in on Rob Ford’s crack cocaine scandal, telling a late-night chat show audience the beleaguered Toronto mayor has broken all stereotypes about Canadians.

Clinton knows a thing or two about a scandal and he briefly addressed Ford’s troubles when he appeared on an episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to discuss his humanitarian efforts, U.S. politics and speculation that his wife, Hillary Clinton, could run for president in 2016.

The former president was dragged into the discussion by host Jimmy Kimmel.

“Have you been following Toronto Mayor Rob Ford?” Kimmel asked Clinton as the audience erupted in laughter. “I know he’s Canadian but I would love it if you could put a word in with Hillary. (He’s) a potential running mate, maybe secretary of state.”

“Well, I will say this. He has absolutely destroyed every stereotype people have about Canadians,” Clinton joked. “The Canadians are upbeat, optimistic, can do, they are embracing, they’re inclusive…”

“Who’s more inclusive that him?” Kimmel interjected.

“Everything I ever believed about Canadians, ol’ Rob has proved that … stereotypes are not good, positive or negative, I guess,” Clinton said, as the pair moved on to a different topic.

Clinton is no stranger to political scandal. His second term as president was overshadowed by his sexual relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Clinton's extra-marital affair came to light in 1998 and it led to him being impeached and nearly kicked out of office.

Ford's critics say he has brought shame to Toronto over his scandal, which saw him admit to smoking crack cocaine and purchasing illegal drugs while in office.

The mayor has also been condemned for appearing intoxicated in public on multiple occasions, and he has been hit by damaging allegations contained in court documents that were filed in an ongoing police investigation into Ford, his friend Alexander Lisi and others.

None of the allegations has been proven in court and Ford has not been charged with a crime.

The mayor has become a favourite target for late-night funnymen over his crack cocaine scandal and his antics in public. After being the butt of jokes for months, Ford got a chance to explain himself when he appeared on Kimmel’s show in early March, but the host wound up ridiculing him for most of the segment.
