York Regional Police have charged a 65-year-old retired police officer after a young girl reported she was sexually assaulted late last month.

Police say they received a report that a young girl was sexually assaulted on Oct. 30, and began an investigation into the allegation on Nov. 3.

A suspect identified as Donald Clark was arrested Tuesday and charged with sexual assault and sexual interference. He is expected to appear in a Newmarket court sometime on Wednesday.

Const. Laura Nicolle said that investigators are not releasing where in York Region the assault took place out of an abundance of caution.

The accused worked as a York Regional Police officer from 1976 to 2006, retiring as a sergeant. Since 2007, he has worked part time for the police service in fleet services. In light of the allegations, the accused’s employment contract has been terminated, police said.

Anyone with information about this incident or any sexual offences involving minors is asked to call York Regional Police’s Special Victims Unit, Crimes Against Children Section at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7075 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
