Emergency vehicles were called to Pearson International Airport after landing gear collapsed on a small plane taking part in a practice day for the Canadian International Airshow Friday afternoon.

Colleen Swider, a spokesperson for the Canadian International Airshow, confirmed to CP24 that one of the planes taking part in the show was involved in an incident.

“The airshow aircraft was involved in a minor incident. There are no injuries. Both pilots are fine and out of the aircraft. Damage is being assessed,” Swider said.

She said that there are no interruptions to service at Pearson as a result of the incident and that the airshow is scheduled to go ahead as planned.

Police said there are no reports of injury.

Swider said Friday is a full practice day for all the pilots and aircraft that will take part in the airshow this weekend.

“It’s basically the full show and gives them all an opportunity to go out and fly their performance during their practice day,” Swider said.

Planes taking part in the airshow fly in and out of both Pearson and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.

While she couldn’t say what caused the failure of the landing gear, Swider said safety is the top priority of the airshow.

“Safety is absolutely paramount,” Swider said. “That’s our motto and we live by it.”

Airport officials declined to comment on the incident.
