A 27-year-old man has been charged after a 14-year-old girl reported she was harassed and touched in a sexual manner on a transit bus in Markham last month.

York Regional Police say that on Jan. 13 at 5:45 p.m., a 14-year-old girl boarded a bus near the intersection of Highway 7 and Town Centre Boulevard.

A man on board the bus who was seated across from her tried to start a conversation with her, police said.

The man then moved to sit next to the girl, and allegedly began to comment on the girl’s appearance.

Police allege the man then grabbed some of the girl’s personal belongings and as she tried to get them back, the man allegedly touched her in a sexual manner.

The victim then exited the bus and later reported the incident to investigators.

On Feb. 3, police arrested a suspect without incident in the area of Highway 7 and Kennedy Road.

He has been charged with one count of sexual assault, one count of sexual interference and one count of criminal harassment.

He is scheduled to appear in court in Newmarket on Feb. 17.
