Mayor John Tory’s continues to enjoy the support of most Torontonians but his popularity has dipped slightly, a new poll from Forum Research suggests.

The telephone survey of 843 residents found that 67 per cent of respondents approve of the job Tory is doing as mayor, down from 74 per cent in a similar poll in December.

Tory’s support is highest among those 65-year-old and up (83 per cent), those making between $100,000 and $250,000 a year (82 per cent) and those living in Scarborough (70 per cent).

Tory, meanwhile, was less popular among those making between $20,000 and $40,000 a year (53 per cent approval) and those who voted for Doug Ford in the most recent election (42 per cent).

"We can point to the difference between a month ago and today but Mayor Tory still has very high approval ratings, similar to those he wore in the first months of the mayoral campaign,” Forum Research President Dr. Lorne Bozinoff said in a press release accompanying the poll. “Since mid-December, the mayor has made announcements and enacted policy, some of which has ruffled feathers. I wouldn’t say the honeymoon is over, but Toronto is beginning to judge John Tory as a working mayor, rather than as a recent saviour.”

Tory has faced some criticism in recent days for his plan to borrow money from the province in order to plug a hole in the city’s budget. In spite of its reliance on outside funding, it appears the majority of Torontonians do support the proposed budget for 2015 with 59 per cent saying they approve of the details described to them and 24 per cent saying they disapprove of them. An additional 12 per cent said they didn’t have an opinion.

As for the 2.75 per cent property tax hike proposed as part of the budget, residents were split with 41 per cent saying it is “too high,” 42 per cent saying it is “about right” and 10 per cent saying it is “too small.” Eight per cent didn’t have an opinion.

Some of the other highlights of the poll include:

  • The majority of respondents support a proposed 10 cent TTC fare increase (51 per cent)
  • About two thirds of respondents are in favour of letting kids ages 12 and under ride the TTC for free (64 per cent).
  • Satisfaction with garbage collection is higher West of Yonge Street where private contractor Green for Life operates (50 per cent “very satisfied” in the west versus 44 per cent in the east)

The poll was conducted on January 24 and 25 and is considered accurate to within three percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
