A Newmarket man charged with second-degree murder in the death of his two-year-old son has been remanded into custody until his next court appearance.

Mario Wint, 29, made a brief appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on Sunday morning and was remanded into custody until his next court appearance on Wednesday.

York Regional Police previously told CP24 that Wint called police shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Thursday and told officers his son was not breathing.

When paramedics arrived at the home on Longford Drive, police say the child was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Wint was arrested on Saturday afternoon after investigators received “various results,” police have said.

A cause of death has not been released.
