Police say a 17-year-old male has been charged after a 13-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in North York Sunday and then lied to police about the circumstances.

Officers originally told reporters Sunday that they believed that the boy was shot in a drive-by shooting as he tried to run from his attackers.

But on Monday, police said that wasn’t the case. They allege the suspect allegedly gave the younger boy a gun while they were inside an apartment on San Romanoway on May 24. The boy accidentally shot himself in the leg while handling the weapon. After the boy shot himself, police allege the suspect helped him to an intersection nearby and told him to say he had been shot at that location.

Officers were called to the intersection of Driftwood Avenue and Wilmont Drive just before 2 p.m. where they found the boy with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was taken to hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

On Monday, police said they had arrested the older boy, who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The older teen is now facing a number of charges, including possession of a restricted weapon, careless storage of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a restricted weapon with ammunition, attempting to obstruct justice, public mischief and four counts of failing to comply with recognizance.

He was scheduled to make a court appearance Monday.

On Monday police also carried out a raid at the building where the boy was shot to look for other possible weapons. No one was arrested in the raid. Police would not say whether they seized anything.
