One person was pronounced dead on scene after a two-alarm fire broke out inside an east-end apartment early Monday morning.

The blaze began in the bedroom of a third floor apartment above a store on Danforth Avenue east of Greenwood Avenue at around 2:15 a.m. and was knocked down by firefighters within about 25 minutes.

The victim, who has not been identified, was then found inside the apartment.

The body has not yet been removed from the building.

"We do know that there was a smoke alarm that was was still there in the unit, but whether it was sounding or not we aren't sure," Division Commander Bob O'Hallarn told CP24 at the scene.

The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate the cause of the blaze.
