A former college basketball player is one of two men charged with first-degree murder after a mother of four was fatally shot in the garage of her Malvern home Saturday night.

Andrea White, 33, was with family and friends of her young daughter when a white SUV drove by her Forest Creek Pathway home shortly after 11 p.m. and one of its occupants opened fire, striking her several times.

The SUV subsequently sped away from the scene and was later spotted travelling on Highway 401 near Avenue Road by Ontario Provincial Police.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled northbound on Bathurst Street before the occupants abandoned it and fled on foot, police say.

One of the occupants was then arrested after a short foot pursuit and the other surrendered to police several hours later.

A discarded firearm was then located in the Highway 401 and Avenue Road area.

“The white Land Rover SUV drove past Ms. White’s residence, made a U-turn and then drove past Ms. White’s residence again, at which point a firearm was discharged from the passenger side of the Land Rover,” Det. Dave Dickinson told reporters at the scene Sunday afternoon. “We believe the address was targeted but I don’t have a motive on the shooting right now. It is only 12 hours into the investigation.”

Police say they are reviewing surveillance footage to see if the incident may have been captured on tape.

Victim was well-liked in community: neighbours

Meanwhile, neighbours at the Grace Hartman Housing Co-Operative are remembering White as a “wonderful person” and a true friend.

“She was like a sister to me. She was a good mother, a wonderful person and she didn’t deserve what she got,” one neighbour identifying himself as Melvin told CP24 on Sunday. “I don’t know why that would have happened to her. I am going to miss her.”

“She has always been a beautiful lady who is always helping with the kids out here,” added another neighbour identifying himself as John-Mark. "Whenever I come out she is smiling and it is always 'Hello' and 'How are you?'"

As news of White’s violent death spread Sunday, neighbours and friends left candles and flowers outside her home, with some stopping to say a prayer.

Keisha Johnson, a friend of White’s, told CP24 she saw her friend frequently.

“We barbecued together, we went camping, we saw each other every day. Andrea was at my house every day or I’d be at her house,” Johnson told CP24. “So this is just so tragic, it’s heartbreaking.”

Michael Davani, 21, and Alwayne Bigby, 23, are expected to appear in court tomorrow.

A former college basketball player, Bigby played three seasons at Northeastern University before transferring to the University of Rhode Island for his final season in 2012-2013.

The school's website says that Bigby was pursuing his Masters degree in education and had played his high school basketball for Eastern Commerce Collegiate Institute in Toronto.
