Police have arrested a Whitby woman after a car crashed into an Oshawa home, struck a gas line and then fled the scene early Friday morning.

The Pontiac Sunfire was travelling along Bloor Street West at around 1:15 a.m. when it left the roadway near Park Road, crashed into the living room of the residence and then burst into flames.

The occupants of the home escaped without injury as did the occupants of a nearby apartment building, which was also evacuated.

“I thought the train derailed and then I opened my door to a car in the living room igniting in flames. The smell was just disgusting,” homeowner Corey Gallacher told CTV News Friday morning. “The noise, the smoke, the fire. Everybody was running because they thought (it was a) bomb.”

The suspect was found walking in downtown Oshawa later Friday morning and was taken into custody.

Kaylynn Gaspar, 25, has been charged with dangerous operation and fail to remain.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Const. MacDuff of the Traffic Services Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5267.
