Police have released surveillance camera footage that shows the suspect in a Scarborough pizza shop murder being dropped off near the crime scene and then picked up a short time later.

Abdul Monir and another man were gunned down outside Halal Pizza Time and Restaurant near Markham Road and Lawrence Avenue, where they both worked, shortly after midnight on Sept. 14.

Monir, a father of two and recent immigrant from Afghanistan, was pronounced dead at the scene while the other man was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he remains.

Police have previously said that they believe the shooting was the result of a robbery attempt.

“Releasing this video is an attempt to trigger the memories of potential witnesses,” Det. Sgt. Graham Gibson told reporters. “Witnesses may have seen something important that night and they may not have remembered it at first but seeing video may help them realize that what they saw was actually important.”

In the grainy footage released by police on Tuesday, a male suspect is seen getting out of a light-coloured vehicle on Markham Road and then running towards the pizza parlour.

Surveillance footage taken from nearby Cedarbrae Library then shows the suspect vehicle parking in front and awaiting the suspect, who subsequently runs through the library parking lot and gets in the passenger side door. The vehicle then fled the scene, travelling southbound on Confederation Drive.

An unidentified female is also seen in the footage and police are hoping that person sees the video, recognizes themself and then comes forward.

“She is probably in that area but we have been unable to locate her despite our canvassing,” Gibson said.

Gibson told reporters that police have not yet been able to speak with the surviving victim; however he said they have recovered a variety of surveillance camera footage, including video taken inside the restaurant.

According to Gibson, that video “shows parts of what happened” but is missing “other parts.”
