A 23-year-old man has been arrested in Toronto as part of a terrorism-related investigation, the RCMP says.

According to a news release, the suspect was taken into custody on Saturday as part of a national security investigation called Project SWAP.

The RCMP says there is “no indication” that the suspect was planning a domestic attack.

“This arrest speaks to our ability to tackle a threat that is multifaceted and constantly evolving. While there was no indication of any plans for a domestic attack, we must remain committed to preventing individuals from travelling abroad to gain training and expertise that could be used in the planning and implementation of future attacks on Canadian soil,” Superintendent Lise Crouch said in a press release.

Kevin Omar Mohamed was arrested pursuant to a section of the criminal code titled Fear of Terrorism Offence and has been charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace and carrying a concealed weapon.

The RCMP says Durham Regional Police and Ontario Provincial Police both played a “significant role in the case.”

Mohamed’s lawyer, Anser Farooq, said his client was arrested in Waterloo on Friday at about 2 p.m.

Farooq said he expected his client would also be charged with terrorism offences, but that has not happened.

He said the RCMP’s allegations against his client involve “communications with other parties within Canada.”

“The RCMP feels that this communication that was happening was not appropriate, it was criminal in nature,” Farooq said. “That’s for a judge to decide whether it’s criminal communication or not. But they feel it was something that warranted an arrest, but obviously not sufficient enough that charges were laid.”

Mohamed is currently in police custody and appeared briefly in court on Saturday morning. He will appear in a Brampton court on Tuesday.

Farooq told the Canadian Press that the Crown would like his client to sign a peace bond, which is a court document requiring a person to obey certain conditions.

Farooq said that his client has been under surveillance since sometime in 2014. Mohamed was previously enrolled in the engineering program at the University of Waterloo.

Farooq said the weapon his client is being charged for possessing is a knife of some kind.

The RCMP says that the arrest is in no way related to the recent terror attacks in Brussels.
