A suspect wanted in connection with the murder of a 47-year-old man in the city’s Stockyards District last week has been arrested in Halifax, police confirmed Sunday.

At around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Toronto police officers were called to the area of Davenport Road and Old Weston Road to check on someone who they believed required assistance.

When police arrived at the address, they found a man dead inside the home.

Police later confirmed that the victim was killed as a result of blunt force trauma.

"What I can tell you is he was severely beaten," Det. Robert North told CP24 Sunday.

On Saturday, officials identified 46-year-old Anthony Brake as a suspect wanted in connection with the homicide and about 24 hours later, officials confirmed that Brake had been arrested in Halifax early Sunday morning.

“He didn’t actually turn himself in. (The) Halifax Police Service, at about 1:15 this morning, received a call to a private residence advising that they believe Mr. Brake was in fact at that residence. They attended, he identified himself and he was taken into custody without incident,” North told reporters during a news conference on Sunday afternoon.

Police say they do not know what Brake’s connection is to the east coast city.

Officers previously confirmed that Brake was the owner of the Toronto home where the victim was found.

Police also noted that the victim and the suspect were acquaintances but it is not clear what the victim was doing at the home.

Brake briefly appeared in court in Halifax on Sunday and police say he will be transferred to Toronto, where he will make another court appearance next week at Old City Hall.

North confirmed that Brake has been charged with second-degree murder.

Police have not yet released the name of the victim.

“At this point, we have still not notified next of kin,” North added.

“We are in the process of determining who they are and once we are able to notify them, then we will release his name.”
