It may be a good weekend to stay indoors as the coldest weekend of the season hits Toronto and the GTHA.

On Saturday, Toronto will see a daytime high of -15 C but the temperature will feel closer to -30 and -40 this morning with wind chill values improving only slightly this afternoon.

An extreme cold warning issued by Environment Canada and an extreme cold weather alert put in place by the city remain in effect for Toronto.

It was a new record low at Pearson International Airport today as the temperature plummeted to -25.8 C.

According to Toronto Hydro, the cold is responsible for at least one hydro outage in the city.

In the area of Royal York Road and Dundas Street, approximately 200 customers are without power after insulator damage caused by the cold temperatures. Power is expected to be restored by around 6 p.m.

Another power outage was reported in the downtown core affecting 1,600 customers. That issue was resolved at around 2 p.m.

Power was restored shortly after 2 p.m. to those affected by a third outage reported in the area bounded by Steeles to Finch and Yonge to Bayview.

The deep freeze also created problems for passengers on a Union-Pearson Express train this morning.

According to Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins, crews will need to switch to another train or track after the cold weather snapped a rail this morning.

For those who need to be outdoors this weekend, the national weather agency is reminding people to wear appropriate fabrics for insulation and to dress in layers, which includes wearing a wind-resistant outer layer.

During the months of January and February, the city operates two 24-hour drop-in centres for people to get out of the cold.

Sunday is expected to be marginally warmer with a high of -10 C and wind chill values in the area of -30.

Relief from the frigid weather should be on the way on Family Day with seasonable temperatures in the forecast.

One NBA player in town for All Star Weekend took to Twitter to express his displeasure with the recent bout of cold weather.
