An association representing Ontario truck drivers is calling on Mayor John Tory to “revisit” his zero-tolerance policy on illegally parked delivery trucks ahead of a planned enforcement blitz that is scheduled to begin on Monday.

Tory said on Thursday that there will be an increased police and tow truck presence during rush hour on Monday, but in a statement released on Friday the Ontario Trucking Association asked the mayor to reconsider the “immediate implementation” of the policy.

"We are in discussions with mayor’s office to discuss long-term solutions to the real problem of congestion in the downtown core,” the statement read. “We think there are potential solutions and will begin working with the mayor’s office on exploring the feasibility of these solutions.”

Tory campaigned on a promise to crackdown on delivery truck drivers who take up lanes of traffic during rush hour and on Thursday he joked with reporters that he’d like the opportunity to personally tow some of the violators himself.

The mayor then went on to explain why a zero-tolerance approach is necessary.

“Look it is a big city. There is going to be traffic. We just can’t have people on their own deciding that they are going to make matters worse, though, by pulling over to deliver an envelope or get a coffee,” he said. “We are going to clean that up the best we can.”
