Starting June 6 travellers will be able to hop on a Union Pearson Express train to go between the city’s downtown core and the largest airport in the region.

The launch date was announced by Premier Kathleen Wynne on Wednesday morning shortly after officials took part in the UP Express' inaugural run.

Wynne said the province was committed to getting the express rail service up and running in time for the Toronto 2015 Parn Am and Parapan Am Games this summer.

According to the premier, the $456-million project was completed on budget and on time.

“This is going to change the city and it is going to change travel in and out of this region," the premier told reporters during a news conference at Pearson Airport Wednesday morning.

“There were all sorts of challenges along the way but we got here and it is a terrific, terrific success."

The express rail service will depart every 15 minutes 19.5 hours a day and transports passengers from Union to Pearson in 25 minutes.

Trains will also stop at the Bloor and Weston GO stations.

The fare structure for the service was announced in December and a one-way adult ticket will cost $27.50. PRESTO card holders will pay $19 for a one-way ride and for students and seniors, the price has been set at $23.40.

The province says that the UP Express is expected to carry 2.35 million passengers per year by 2018 and a total of 190 million travellers by 2031.

Wynne called the project "transformative" and "necessary" for future prosperity in the province.

"When you see projects like this and you see how they can transform a region, we know this is going to change the way people travel in Toronto, to Toronto," she said.

"It is going to change people's prospective of Toronto, people’s perception of the kind of city that this is, the kind of region this is."
