Police say they did not make any arrests after an incident at Yonge-Dundas Square on Saturday night in which a large crowd screamed and appeared to advance upon officers.

The incident, which was captured on video and subsequently posted to YouTube, took place near the entrance to the ticket booth in the square.

The minute-long video shows a large crowd shouting obscenities at a group of officers, who then back away. The video also appears to show objects being thrown in the direction of the officers at one point.

Police have not said what brought about the confrontation; however the person who shot the video told CTV News that tensions arose after police attempted to break up the large crowd that had gathered.

“There was a lot of young people and police wanted to disband them. Police started walking into the centre of the (Yonge) Dundas Square (crowd) and suddenly people started throwing bottles at the police and then one guy shouted that they (police) are useless and ‘let’s go guys’ and they (the crowd) just started pushing the police at the exit,” Shota Abaishvili said. "Next, the police just left and exited onto Dundas Street."

The confrontation occurred as large crowds roamed the downtown for Nuit Blanche, however there were not any exhibits for the all-night art festival staged at Yonge-Dundas Square.

Abaishvili, who was coming from a nearby bar when he noticed the crowd, told CTV News that the situation was ”quite tense” but was handled professionally by the officers.
