A woman is now facing charges in connection with a fire at a rooming house in Little Portugal that left one firefighter with serious injuries.

The blaze broke out at a home in the Dufferin Street and Alma Avenue area on Oct. 11.

According to police, the home was being run as an illegal rooming house.

An investigation by the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management and Toronto Fire Services found “numerous violations of the Ontario Fire Code” at the home, police said in a news release Wednesday.

Toronto Fire Division Chief Larry Cocco told CP24 that the owner of the home was previously convicted of fire code violations in August 2015, more than a year before the October fire. He said he wasn’t sure why the rooming house had been allowed to continue operation.

In the course of fighting the blaze, a 19-year veteran of the fire department lost consciousness and had to be pulled from the home. Cocco told CP24 that the firefighter suffered burns and was just released from hospital within the last few days.

Celia Gilda Gomez, 72, has been charged with two counts of arson by negligence, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, mischief endangering life and mischief (under $5,000).

She is scheduled to make a court appearance Nov. 29.

Municipal Licensing and Standards and Toronto Fire Services continue to investigate.
