Police have issued a public safety alert after a dozen homes were broken into in North York over a span of a few weeks.

According to Sgt. Matthew Routh, 12 break-ins have occurred between midnight and 5 a.m. at homes in the neighbouhoods of Bayview Village, Hillcrest Village and the surrounding area. Police said the crimes happened within the area of Bayview Avenue to the west, Highway 404 to the east, Sheppard Avenue to the south and Steeles Avenue to the north.

Some of the break-ins, Routh said, have occurred while the homeowners slept while others have occurred while the homeowners were out.

Police have not revealed what has been taken from the homes, citing the ongoing investigation.

“We are obviously concerned that these break-ins are happening in a fairly defined residential area,” Routh told CP24 on Monday afternoon. “Safety is our paramount concern. Turn your rear lights on at home, pay attention to the ongoings in your neighbourhood and report anything suspicious that you do see regardless of the time because we don’t know necessarily when the person or persons responsible are scouting the homes for a break-and-enter.”

According to Routh, the break-ins have taken place at homes that back on to ravines.

So far, police have not been able to come up with a suspect description.

“All we know at this time is it is a person dressed in black,” Routh said.
