The last long weekend of the summer may be upon us but climatologist Dave Phillips says that doesn’t mean it’s jacket season just yet.

“There is a lot of heat left in the land and the lakes,” Phillips, a senior climatologist with Environment Canada, told CP24 Friday.

“We think the flavour, the personality of the fall—September, October, November—looks like it is going to be milder than normal.”

Adjusting to cooler temperatures may be slightly more difficult for Torontonians this year, given the near-perfect weather conditions we saw this summer.

“From July the 1st until last week, 19 Saturdays and Sundays in Toronto, it only rained on one of them. In my 45 years of being a weather weenie, I’ve never seen such perfect kind of conditions,” Phillips said.

“This was absolutely the perfect kind of a summer.”

When it comes to the winter, Phillips says he’s optimistic that the season will be more forgiving this year.

“Even if it is normal, it will feel tropical compared to the last two winters,” Phillips said.

“We’ve had to endure a lot of tough winters when the rest of the world was the warmest winter on record. We are going to share in that this year.”

As for the long weekend, hot and humid weather will continue.

Toronto will see temperatures hover around 30 C on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. There is a chance of showers and a thunderstorm on Saturday afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to return to seasonal by the end of next week.
