A 12-year-old is facing a list of charges after allegedly stealing a vehicle in the Toronto area and then leading police on a high-speed pursuit near Port Hope.

Ontario Provincial Police say they were alerted to the possibility that the stolen vehicle from Toronto could be travelling through the Northumberland area on Monday.

Following that, a theft of gas was reported in the Quinte West area with the suspect vehicle matching the description of the stolen vehicle.

Officers then allegedly observed the vehicle travelling along Highway 401 near Port Hope at around 6 p.m. and attempted to pull it over.

OPP say a chase was then initiated with the suspect eventually being apprehended on County Road 2 near the Town of Newtonville.

The suspect, who cannot be identified under the terms of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with theft of a motor vehicle, theft under $5,000, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and breach of a recognizance.
