The race to replace Mississauga’s longest-serving mayor Hazel McCallion continues to be a tight one, according to a new Forum Research poll.

There’s only four points separating two former MPs Bonnie Crombie and Steve Mahoney.

The poll, conducted on Sept. 27, surveyed 557 voters in Mississauga. It found Mahoney leading the pack with 40 per cent of the vote but with Crombie trailing not far behind with 36 per cent of the vote.

The third place candidate, Stephen King, received nine per cent support and 15 per cent of respondents said they were undecided.

The new poll also suggests Mahoney is considered to be the candidate with the best transit plan, the best vision for the city, the best candidate to keep taxes low and the best candidate to handle the city’s budget.

Crombie and Mahoney were tied at 34 per cent for the best candidate to carry on McCallion’s legacy.

This poll is considered accurate by plus or minus 4.3 per cent, 19 times out of 20.

The most notable different between this month’s poll and last month’s survey is that more voters appear to have made up their mind about who to support.

Last month, 47 per cent of Mississauga respondents said they were undecided, 27 per cent said they supported Mahoney and 26 per cent said they would vote for Crombie.

“These two candidates have been evenly matched since we started polling the Mississauga campaign,” Lorne Bozinoff, president of Forum Research said in a news release contextualizing the poll.

“Now, however, one appears to be pulling away, and one appears to be faltering. With a month left in the race, it’s too early to predict if this trend will continue,” he said.
