With less than a week to go before the provincial election, Ontarians are split on who would make the best premier, a new poll shows.

The poll, conducted by Ipsos Reid for CTV and CP24, shows a three-way split in terms of who people believe would make the best premier.

Some 34 per cent believe that Liberal Leader Kathleen Wynne would make the best premier, while 34 per cent think NDP Leader Andrea Horwath would be best and 32 per cent think Progressive Leader Tim Hudak would be best.

The numbers also show that people will not necessarily vote for the party they would like to see win.

Some 93 per cent of people who will vote for the Liberals say they would like to see a Liberal government; 91 per cent of PC voters actually want a PC government; and 76 per cent of those casting a ballot for the NDP actually want to see them form a government.

The discrepancy is believed to be due to strategic voting patterns, with some people planning to vote so as to try and defeat a particular party.

Whoever they plan to vote for, half of all respondents say they expect the Liberals to win the election. Some 36 per cent expect the PCs to win the election, while 14 per cent expect the NDP to win.

Economy main issue for most voters

Asked which issue voters would like to see their vote count for on election day, 30 per cent of respondents said ‘better jobs and economy.’

Better healthcare and lower taxes tied for a distant second, with 10 per cent of respondents choosing each as the most significant election issue. Paying off debt and balancing the budget came in at nine per cent, while eight per cent of respondents said integrity in government and its leaders is the most important issue.

Voters will cast their ballots on June 12.

The poll was conducted between June 3 and June 6 and sampled 2,140 Ontarians online. The poll is considered accurate to within plus or minus 2.4 per cent.
