A mother and her child were killed as a result of a two-vehicle crash in Markham Monday morning.

The 42-year-old woman and a four-year-old girl were rushed to hospital without vital signs after the collision. They were both pronounced in hospital a short time after arrival.

The collision happened near 16th and Bur Oak avenues at around 9:45 a.m. and involved a black Toyota sedan heading east and a black Infiniti driving west.

Extensive damage to the front end of both vehicles suggests the vehicles collided head on.

Workers at a nearby construction site told CP24 they rushed to the scene after hearing a loud crash.

Some of them started to administer CPR before emergency crews arrived at the scene.

The dead woman and child were in the Toyota. There were no other passengers.

A male driver and his infant child were inside the Infinity. The man was unconscious at first and was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The infant was crying, but appeared to be uninjured according to police. The baby was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Officers from the Major Collision Bureau are investigating the crash and are trying to piece together any clues that might help explain what happened.

“What we really need right now are witnesses to come forward,” Const. Andy Pattenden told CP24.

Police are also looking for any vehicles that may have dashboard camera footage of the vehicles involved to come forward.

Police say that roads in the area will be closed while a full investigation is completed.
