A Charlottetown man is voicing his displeasure with Air Canada after a frightening incident on-board a recent flight.

David Smith was on Jazz flight with his five-year-old daughter laying in his lap when he says he heard a loud bang outside his window.

“And when I looked out something, it looked like it came from the prop area. And I couldn’t begin to tell you what it was, but it hit the window and it probably put an inch to an inch and a half hole in the pane of glass,” Smith told CTV News Channel on Tuesday afternoon.

A photo posted to his Twitter account Tuesday shows the window with a noticeable hole blown through it. The aircraft appears to be a propeller plane.

“I did try and visually flag down a flight attendant but they were preparing to descend and putting things away and getting into their seats so I didn’t get a chance to call someone over,” Smith said. “My fear was that being this close to landing, I didn’t want to alarm everyone else on the plane and begin a panic.”

According to Smith, the window was punctured while the plane was descending from 25,000 feet.

Officials with Jazz later investigated the cause and determined a piece of ice hit the window.

The experience left Smith feeling unnerved.

A spokesperson for Air Canada said he believes the company’s customer care department has left messages for the passenger but could not say if they have spoken to him yet.

“At the time the customer only reported the incident at the conclusion of the flight as he and other passengers were leaving the aircraft,” Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick told CP24. “As soon as we learned today he had concerns, our customer care team reached out to him.”

Fitzpatrick called the incident “unsettling” but said passenger safety was never at risk because the windows of the plane are double enforced.

“While the safety of the aircraft was not an issue, we recognize this was an unsettling experience so we responded to provide reassurance as soon as we knew he wished to speak with us.

Smith said customer care representatives from the airline spoke to him this afternoon.

“They were quite apologetic and concerned for our well being and I do appreciate that.”
