Police say a 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a deadly double shooting in Scarborough on Friday night.

Twenty-four-year-old Cynthia Mullapudi and 26-year-old Joseph Anzolona were shot to death inside a parked vehicle shortly before 10 p.m. Friday after making a brief stop at an LCBO near Ellesmere Road and Victoria Park Avenue.

Speaking to reporters on Monday afternoon, Staff Insp. Greg McLane said the pair and two of their friends were inside the SUV at the time of the shooting.

According to McLane, two members of the group had entered the liquor store to make a purchase and when they returned to the vehicle, a lone gunman approached the SUV.

The suspect, police say, opened the back door of the SUV and fired several shots into the back seat of the car, where Mullapudi and Anzolona were sitting.

Police say the two were shot numerous times and the suspect fled the area.

The two victims were rushed to hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

On Sunday night, McLane said the suspected gunman, identified as 24-year-old Toronto resident Harris Nnane, was arrested on Sunday night and has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

When asked about a possible motive for the shooting, McLane said officers are still investigating.

“I would suggest that him (Anzolona) being the target of this would be more likely than her (Mullapudi),” McLane added.

The investigators said that both Anzolona and Nnane are known to police however, Mullapudi , who was a student, had no previous dealings with law enforcement.

McLane also said police believe Nnane is a gang member but the staff inspector would not say what gang they think he is connected to.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.

“We are also asking anyone who may have video, still photographs or security footage from the area that evening to also contact my investigators,” McLane said.
