At least 13 people have been injured in a huge pileup in the northbound lanes of Highway 400 in King Township.

It happened near Lloydtown-Aurora Road at around 5:30 p.m.

York Regional Paramedic Services said between 20 and 40 vehicles were involved in the collision.

Ontario Provincial Police said 13 people were injured in the pileup, though York paramedics said it could be as many as 16. Nine of those injured were taken to hospital, paramedics said. The extent of their injuries is not yet clear.

It is not known how long the closure will last.

The pileup comes amid a bout of wintry weather on the GTA that has seen snowfall and slick driving conditions in parts of the region. OPP issued a reminder Sunday evening via Twitter for drivers to slow down amid the poor driving conditions.
