A 10-year-old boy is the latest casualty of a massive 20-car pileup on Highway 401 in Whitby that claimed the lives of three other people Friday night.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt confirmed Monday that the boy, who was the younger brother of a 12-year-old boy pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, passed away in hospital on Sunday.

The deadly collision took place in the westbound lanes of Highway 401 near Salem Road at around 10:30 p.m. Friday.

Police previously said a fully-loaded transport truck failed to slow down for construction and collided with traffic, causing a chain-reaction collision involving a total of three transport trucks and about 17 other vehicles.

Two adults and the 12-year-old died at the scene. Four people remain in hospital, including the parents of the two boys who died. Police say the children's mother is currently listed in critical condition.

The driver of the transport truck that police suspect triggered chain-reaction collision was not injured, according to investigators.

A risk manager for Preston Freight Systems, which is headquartered in Mississauga, confirms one of its truck drivers was involved in the collision but would not release a name. The driver, the company says, does not live in the Greater Toronto Area and was coming from Montreal at the time of the crash.

Police have not yet released the names of those killed in the crash and charges have not yet been laid.

“Investigators are still working on the case, trying to get everything put together," Schmidt told CP24 Monday morning.

"There is a lot of information to go through."

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the Whitby OPP detachment at 905-668-3388.
